Bikeability training for pupils in Years 5 and 6

Dear Parent/Guardian,

For the first time, inspired by the increase of bike use during lockdown, we are looking at offering Bikeability training for our Year 5 or 6 children during November. However this would depend on interest and equipment, to whether it is for both or just one class. Therefore this letter is an opportunity to register your child’s interest and provide us with information regarding bike and helmet availability.

Bikeability, offered by Bradford Council, is 'cyclist training' for the 21st century; designed to give the next generation of riders the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. Bikeability was developed by more than 20 professional organisations including the Royal Society for Prevention Against Accidents and is supported by cross-Government departments including the Department for Transport, Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families. So far, more than 2 million young cyclists have been trained across the country.

The children will be in small groups and undertake a combined Level 1 and 2 course, depending on their ability, which is 9 hours long and is generally delivered over 2 school days across a week. During Level 1, they learn to control and master their bike. The training takes place in the playground away from cars or traffic. Only if deemed safe by the instructors will the children get out onto the roads for Level 2, which gives them the confidence and cycling experience to deal with traffic on short journeys such as cycling to school or to friends.

It is preferred the children bring their own working bike and helmet.  We will do our best to open this to all children by looking at loaning bikes and helmets for children to borrow, but please note that current COVID restrictions make this more difficult.

Please email your interest and provide details of bike and helmet ownership to the home learning account - homelearning@stfrancisbrad.co.uk by September 23rd.

Yours sincerely

Miss Burgess
